Per linguas mundi ad laborem

General information

The Project "Per linguas mundi ad laborem (Through languages of the world to employment)" is currently in a phase of execution (from the first half of the year 2005 till the end of march 2008).
The Project is based on a principle of Partnership among the State Rehabilitation Fund, the Academy for Special Pedagogy, the Catholic University of Lublin, the Polish Association of the Blind and the University of Warsaw.

The basic aim of undertaken activities is to help the blind and impaired in vision persons to get employment through developing their English language proficiency.

Undertaken activities

In the scope of the project there were established:
Free of charge English language courses for persons with a dysfunction of vision.
Within the confines of the project IW EQUAL "Per linguas mundi ad laborem" ("Through languages of the world to employment)" 80 persons impaired in vision will have an opportunity to participate in free of charge, intensive English language courses. During these courses innovative didactic aids, accommodated for the needs of persons with vision disability, will be used.
The courses will be conducted by lectors specially prepared for teaching the blind and impaired in vision persons. Moreover, the course participants will benefit from a comprehensive assistance scheme of the Vocational Advisory Center, that will offer help with job seeking and various courses, for example: courses on interpersonal contact skills or on preparation of individual plans of vocational development [ read more ]
Postgraduate studies for English language teachers who work with persons with vision dysfunction.
The studies are intended for graduates of linguistic graduate studies. Classes last for 3 terms and are organized as 3 days sessions (Friday-Sunday), every two weeks.
The scope of topics covers basics of thyphlology, psychology and pedagogy of persons with sight dysfunction as well as typhlodidactics of the English language and practical techniques of using didactic materials. Students are obliged to complete 50 hours of didactic internships.

Studies are free of charge. For persons from outside Warsaw, there exists a possibility of covering cost of their temporary accommodation. It has been planned that these studies would start in September 2006, its completion is scheduled for June 2007 [ read more ]

Tasks of the University in the scope of the project

In the scope of the project "Per linguas mundi ad laborem" (Through languages of the world to employment) activities of the University of Warsaw focus mainly on:

  • organization of postgraduate studies for English language teachers, which aims at teaching lectors to work with the blind and impaired in vision persons,
  • supervision of application of methods of instruction for English language course for the blind and impaired in vision persons,
  • adaptation of English language textbooks for the blind and impaired in vision persons,
  • working out a textbook devoted to methods of teaching English language to persons with vision dysfunctions,
  • organization of the Didactic Aids Adaptation Center for the blind and impaired in vision persons.
Other activities of the Partnership include:
  • investigation of needs of future clients,
  • conducting English language courses for persons with vision dysfunctions (in Warsaw and in Lublin) in a holiday and a stationary version,
  • working out multimedia didactic aids,
  • organization of computer laboratories, accommodated for teaching foreign languages to persons with sight dysfunctions,
  • working out and implementation of vocational counseling system for persons with sight dysfunctions,
  • mutual exchange of experiences within the confines of International Partnerships (Poland, Great Britain, Slovakia, Greece, Italy).
