Who do we work for?

General information

The Office for Persons with Disabilities at the University of Warsaw (OPD) offer their services for all persons regarded as disabled in a formal sense ..A condition for receiving a help from the Office is an existence of a relationship between a disability and difficulties in following a curriculum of studies. This means, that the very fact of possessing a formally stated degree of disability is not a condition sufficient for receiving any services from the University of Warsaw. On the other hand there exists a significant group of students chronically ill or temporarily disabled because of accidents. These students do not possess a formal statement of disability, but because of their health condition are unable to follow a standard curriculum of studies. Such persons are regarded by the Office for Persons with Disabilities as disabled and can receive such services and accommodation that enable them to continue their education.

Who can make use of the services of the Office

Services offered by the Office are accessible for each person, who because of his or her disability or health condition has any difficulties with studying in a standard mode. These difficulties may appear in various forms. For example, lectures can be inaccessible for a person because of a hearing impairment or a literature can be inaccessible because of a visual impairment. An access to building or given lecture rooms may be impossible because of architectural barriers. Another cause of difficulties may be insufficient participation in classes (for example because of relapses of chronic diseases).
The services of the Office include not only persons who are disabled in a formal sense, but also these whose inability for full participation in classes has been caused by a sudden illness, or who have lost their ability because of accidents, and their disability is temporary.

For example, a person who as a result of a car accident for a few months has used a wheelchair to move has also been eligible to use services of the OPD. She did not have a statement of a degree of disability, but her health condition made normal participation in classes impossible for her.

Principles of granting an assistance

We respect an independence of persons with disabilities as well as their rights. For this reason an assistance of our Office is offered only for these persons with disabilities, who voluntarily ask for help and substantiate their health situation.
We carry on a conversation with every new person who reports in our Office. An aim of this conversation is to recognize a student's health and academic situation. An assistance is granted after analyzing a relation between the health situation and difficulties, that enable the student to follow a curriculum of studies in a standard mode.

Help offered by the OPD can take up various forms; starting from transport services, lending an indispensable computer equipment, up to introducing changes in a schedule of classes and in form of completion of courses. Any solutions proposed by the Office should strictly observe a principle of keeping intact requirements concerning a given course. For this reason, a cooperation between the Office and a dean for students affairs is essential.

Required documentation

A student who is applying for help to the Office should present documents confirming his or her heath situation.
These documents are:
  • a statement on a degree of disability,
  • a current medical documentation containing:
    • a diagnosis of a disease (the diagnosis may be expressed in terms of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Health Problems ICD-10) as well as detailed information concerning a course of the disease, its symptoms and treatment (for example what is a sharpness and a field of vision in case of students impaired in vision; a loss of hearing in case of persons with auditory impairment, medications taken by a person suffering from schizophrenia etc.)
    • a documentation does not have to contain a detailed diagnosis. However, in such a case it must contain a detailed description of consequences of the disease and of applied treatment for following a curriculum of studies by the student, who is applying for a help from the Office.

All documents presented in the Office should be supplied in an original form, or as copies with a certificate of their conformity with originals. In case when the student does not possess any documentation or the presented documentation:

  • is incomplete,
  • is damaged,
  • does not conform with an interview obtained from the student,
  • is assessed by the Office staff as insufficient
the student may be referred to a consultation at a specialist doctor cooperating with the Office. The medical documentation - except statements on a degree of disability - should be no later than 90 days.

For students with mental disorders or addictions, an indispensable condition for obtaining an assistance is to start a treatment.
